Sheppard Robson appoints Head of Sustainability
19th May 2020
The moves by the practice aim to maintain commitment and momentum to combatting climate change even in uncertain times.
To bolster Sheppard Robson’s position as a leader in sustainable and responsible design, Alison O’Reilly has joined the practice as Head of Sustainability. Alison will work alongside lead sustainability Partner, Alan Shingler, and the practice’s existing Sustainability Group across all three offices, with her time dedicated to promoting responsible practices, advancing sustainable thinking, and engaging with the wider built environment industries.
The appointment runs in parallel to the practice’s new Sustainability and Innovation Charter. The charter commits to seizing new opportunities to move beyond good practice to accelerate sustainable development, covering topics such as project performance evaluation, the pursuit of whole-life net zero carbon design, and advancing the wellness agenda. The full charter can be read here.
Alan Shingler, partner at Sheppard Robson, said: “The appointment of Alison will help us build on our considerable achievements to date. Alison will be key to leading the application of our new charter, recognising that a practice like Sheppard Robson cannot be wedded to a single solution, but must embrace a complex and multifaceted approach to designing buildings, spaces and places that are as efficient and as inspiring as possible. Even in these uncertain times, it is imperative to not lose sight of climate change as an on-going global crisis, or our responsibility in mitigating its effects.”
Alison O’Reilly commented: “The role at the practice fits well with my interest in untangling complex environmental and social conditions, translating these into practical approaches that deliver outstanding strategies, solutions, and designs for a more responsible built environment.”
Alison is an award-winning designer and sustainability specialist with more than 12 years’ design experience. She previously held the position of Associate at Sheppard Robson before pursuing her master’s degree in 2017, having recently been awarded a joint MA and MSc in Global Innovation Design from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. The Head of Sustainability role provides the opportunity to apply both her advanced theoretical and practical knowledge at Sheppard Robson. Alongside her professional and theoretical experience, Alison is a qualified WELL and BREEAM Accredited Professional, Fitwell Ambassador, and SKA Rating Accredited Assessor (2015).
Sheppard Robson has always been preoccupied by the impact of our profession on the planet. Our pioneering sustainable projects include: the Lighthouse (the UK’s first net zero-carbon house); the LEED Platinum Siemens Middle East Headquarters; Deloitte HQ (the largest WELL Certified™ Gold interiors’ project in the world and the highest ever scoring BREEAM UK fit-out project); Citicape House, a hotel veiled in Europe’s largest living green wall; and a portfolio of schemes that explore minimising embodied carbon through timber construction.
