Interserve UK Hub Birmingham, UK
A collaboration between Sheppard Robson and its interior design group ID:SR, the major new office building and fit-out for FTSE 250 support services and construction firm Interserve is composed to promote collaboration, visual permeability and physical movement around the range of work settings.
The triangular-shaped building reduces the mass of the structure externally, whilst internally, the plan creates the feeling of a continuous loop that promotes the feeling of openness and encourages interaction.
The atrium at the heart of the plan builds drama, with the central stairs as the primary route through the building, prioritising physical movement rather than the use of lifts. This composition results in an incredibly compact plan, bringing people closer together and sparking interaction.
The interiors are organised as four levels, all similar in size that step out around a central atrium. This form characterises the building’s external identity but also shapes the visual and physical permeability of the interior spaces. Each floorplan is arranged in the same way: on the outer parimeter is desking, with meeting rooms positioned as you move towards the centre of the building.
A series of stepped terraces line the courtyard – this animates the internal atrium, promoting visual connections throughout the building and adding a sense of theatre to the expansive central atrium.
