1 Aldgate Union, E1 London, UK
ID:SR received a stretching brief from the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) for the refurbishment and fit-out of No.1 Aldgate Union to provide an efficient, flexible, corporate workspace to accommodate 2,700 employees and the functions associated with a non-customer-facing facility.
The office floors have been designed with business requirements firmly in mind. Zones to inner areas accommodate resource pods, filing and storage, vending and social hubs as well as flexible zones to permit quick decision-making. A 350-seat staff restaurant is accessed directly from the central atrium – the design uses a palette of distinct colours, fluid organic forms and a 30m light-wall depicting a lively international city scene.
The atrium is central to the building; full-height and overlooked from each level; previous occupiers had not capitalised on this asset, and filled it with internal escalators, blocking natural light and breaking visual connectivity to the floorplates. ID:SR has completely transformed the space, creating a real heart to the office, injecting collaboration and connection, aesthetically and physically, into RBS’s working culture.
The workspace concept implements a desk-sharing policy; 2,700 staff occupy 2,300 desks, with teams operating in ‘team zones’. This encourages staff to optimise the use of the support facilities - meeting rooms, flexi-rooms and touchdown areas - on all floors of the building.
