Wade Deacon School Widnes, UK

Halton Borough Council are leading this Building Schools for the Future project to merge two secondary schools together: Wade Deacon High School and Fairfield High School in Widnes. The principle is to take four buildings on two sites and combine them into one site and one building. The objective is to create a modern, vibrant, inclusive learning environment, providing an inspirational building, maximising learning for all.

The challenge for this project has been to combine two schools of differing standards: Wade Deacon is a high performing school, whilst Fairfield has been a low performing school. The aim is to raise the attainment of Fairfield pupils without detracting from the achievements of the Wade Deacon pupils.

The project involves taking a classically designed 1900s grammar school and creating a 21st century learning environment. It has recently been awarded ‘Ouststanding’.
