University of Reading, Life Sciences - The Hopkins Building Reading, UK

The Hopkins Building houses Life Sciences teaching and research space for the Schools of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Food Biosciences and Pharmacy at the University of Reading. Laboratory design was one of the key generators of the external envelope design. Floor-to-ceiling windows between peninsular benches allow light penetration deep into the floorplates and provide views out across the landscape. Externally this is expressed as a skin of vertical metal fins wrapping around the building.

A glazed bridge links to the neighbouring Food Biosciences building. The entrance to the Hopkins Building contains multipurpose space as well as seminar and breakout areas, accessible to all users. This facade is fully glazed, showcasing the activities of the building to the surrounding campus.
