Toyota HQ, Epsom Surrey, UK
The RIBA competition-winning design of Toyota (GB) plc’s headquarters creates an environment which reflects the company’s ambitions and culture, and responds to its greenbelt environment and proximity to a listed building. It has won several awards, including a BCO Special Commendation.
The design is centred on a drum-shaped reception, linking into a 100m long, three-storey central circulation space - the ‘street’. This accommodates stairs, lifts, WCs and services risers and provides a focus for exhibitions/display. Its character is created by staff and visitors crossing to reach the offices and staff restaurant. Four office fingers radiate from the central drum, creating accessible courtyards between. Flexible space planning has minimised departmental boundaries and maximised natural light.
The exposed concrete structure provides ambient ‘coolth’ contributing to the building’s environmental strategy which includes a low-energy, mechanically-assisted natural ventilation system, using an exposed concrete coffered ceiling and passive solar shading. The office floorplate is limited to a depth of 15m to allow natural ventilation via openable windows.
