Suffolk New College Ipswich, UK

Suffolk New College was the first major project in Ipswich’s new education quarter. Designed as an open campus, it is accessible to the public but is also safe and secure for the students. The building form was defined by its urban location and provides visual links to the town centre, nearby station and waterfront. Two blocks, linked at upper levels, enclose a new public square. The north block is triangular in form and encloses a three-storey atrium, the internal focus for the College. The main street elevations are animated with a pattern of sandblasted and colour-washed glass panels which vary in depth and colour. The rhythm of the pattern is stretched to allow greater transparency at the building’s acute corners.

The new building allowed the College to unify all disciplines with their diverse requirements on one site. Learning satellites decentralised the resource centre to locations on various floors, creating real working environments suited to a further education environment.
