Staffordshire University, Science & Technology Centre Stoke-on-Trent, UK
The Science & Technology Centre is one of the projects commissioned by Staffordshire University as a catalyst for the UniQ regeneration initiative at the heart of Stoke-on-Trent. It is to be the home of the science provision of the university, the practical elements of the science provision of the Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College and the current science curriculum of Stoke-on-Trent FE College.
The UniQ schemes are conceived as a family of cubic buildings with bronze, copper and zinc cladding, and are located strategically across the Leek Road and College Road campuses to signify regeneration and renewal and serve to unify the campuses.
The science building is the bronze ‘sibling’, with a generous atrium and centrally-located cubic lecture theatre plus a learning resource centre, accessed via illuminated bridges. The naturally-lit ground floor of the atrium provides a lively entrance, cafeteria and display area and provides visual access to all parts of the building.
