Sport City Manchester, UK
The project is a leisure development under the New East Manchester initiative competition, adjacent to the Manchester City Stadium. Sun International commissioned Sheppard Robson to develop a masterplan proposal for the site centred on a casino and hotel with supporting sports driven developments.
The existing canal is used to define the casino-hotel realm to its north as a distinct zone within the masterplan. The building houses a world class casino, providing 1250 slots and 40 tables. The entrance is through a dramatic glazed boulevard that is adjacent to a new canal basin and opens onto a canal-side public plaza. The boulevard or ‘precinct’ will provide a variety of open restaurants and retail outlets.
On upper levels the signature hotel provides over 150 rooms from three to five star standard, with an extensive banqueting, conference, entertainment level and hotel reception. These facilities can be reached by glazed lifts or via cascading escalators that connect the terraced floors and allow spectacular views out to the Sport City Campus and city centre.
