Shelfield Community Academy Walsall, UK

This redevelopment of a 1,200 pupil academy provides 75% new-build accommodation, the remainder being extensive refurbishment.

By building to the east, with careful relocation of sports pitches, the academy has been delivered in two phases. The old buildings are being cleared and a dynamic new landscape with extensive outdoor teaching areas and sports provision enhance the student experience.

The new and refurbished elements of the academy are unified by a dramatic, two-storey vocational mall enlivened by shared activities including dining and café areas. Open-plan teaching spaces are at the heart of each faculty cluster. A ‘forum’ stair links each cluster to the mall, providing additional informal teaching and break-out spaces
