NHS Scotland Pharmaceutical Specials Service Dundee, UK
Within the NHS, it is policy to use licensed medicines manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry wherever possible for the treatment of patients. Licensed medicines however do not meet the clinical needs of patients in all situations e.g. stroke patients who cannot swallow tablets, paediatric patients who require preparations to be reformulated as liquids. To address these requirements, “unlicensed medicines” are needed in both acute and primary care settings.
Following a major rationalisation of NHS manufacturing units in Scotland, the number of unlicensed manufacturing facilities will be reduced from two to one. The new facility will be located adjacent to the existing Dundee facility on a vacant site in the Ninewells Hospital site. All manufacturing, storage, and administration areas are on one level with plant areas situated above and below this principal level.
The building comprises of five main regulated production suites ranging from Grade D to Grade B. Each suite has its own changing area, with support and administrative areas also provided.
