King’s College - Day Surgery Extension London, UK

King’s College Hospital is at the forefront of promoting day surgery, achieving in the region of 70% of all elective surgery as day cases. Sheppard Robson was appointed to assist with increasing the patient capacity at the Hospital.

A phased programme was proposed for the extensive refurbishment of the existing facility of this 1980s brick-clad, concrete-framed building. The site logistics of maintaining a public service during the refurbished phase was pivotal to the success of the transformation. Infection Control tests were carried out for every phased handover.

King’s College Hospital has exceeded the national target and is the largest day surgery unit in the UK. Many elements of the extension were pre-engineered off-site in Cambridge, where all trade contractors had 24-hour access without disturbing staff, patients and the public.
