Dangstein West Sussex, UK
On a small estate in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this family eco-home will nestle into its setting while making the most of long views across the downs and surrounding historic landscape.
Timber louvred cladding has been designed to act as an environmental filter, allowing daylight in while preventing overheating, shedding rainwater and maximising natural ventilation. The louvres will enclose a flexible, open-plan arrangement, and their spacing and depth will vary according the use of each internal space.
A combination of low-and high-tech solutions, such as wood-burning stoves, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels and a highly insulated envelope, will create a modern, nett zero-carbon home with a regulated energy consumption of just 65KWhr/m²/yr.
Locally-sourced natural materials, including sweet chestnut timber from the estate, will be used where possible. A key aspiration for the house is that it will have a handcrafted quality, telling the story of its construction.
