Citylabs, Manchester Manchester, UK
Citylabs in Manchester is a joint development between Bruntwood, a commercial property company and Manchester Science Parks. It is a new concept in high-specification flexible office and laboratory space that is, set right in the heart of Corridor Manchester, the city’s knowledge quarter, providing 120,000ft² of bespoke-built biomedical facilities.
Sheppard Robson was commissioned to design both the building and anchor tenant’s fit-out. The project consists of a Grade II listed building (the former Royal Eye Hospital) and a new extension block. Due to the listing, the local planners were very sensitive to any new additions so the new design needed to be sympathetic to their concerns as well as providing maximum commercial value for our client.
The agreed solution is a mix of the original building and modern architecture brought together by a beautiful and functional glass atrium. The atrium, with its impressive south-facing entrance and communal areas is at the very heart of the development, providing a truly multifunctional space. The building also meets BREEAM Excellent environmental standards.
