University of Hull, Brynmor Jones Library Hull, UK
The redevelopment and refurbishment of this prestigious library had the design intent of creating modern, exemplary facilities. The team built upon the heritage and history of the Brynmor Jones Library, reaffirming its place at the heart of the student experience, and reinforcing the campus as a ‘people place’ - redefining the library as a dynamic focal point for university life.
The building consists of two main sections: the older Art Deco style entrance and front section and the newer extension completed in 1969, which consists of seven floors plus two basements.
The facilities provide a variety of spaces and facilities to support a wide range of study modes – from the ‘touch down’ e-mail check/document print to the ‘long stay’ research/revision mode. It also features a prominent new display, working and storage area for the University's Special Collections, a beautiful gallery for hosting exhibitions and a new café /social space. The redevelopment facilitates more collaborative and connected working at all levels, as well as reflecting the University’s commitment to the environment and a sustainable future.
The project was completed in phases to permit the students to have uninterrupted access throughout and achieved an increase in NSS results for the library during the project delivery.
