Brunel University - Residential Phase 5, UB8 Uxbridge, London, UK

Sheppard Robson has been involved in the development of Brunel University’s campus for over 50 years. The fifth phase of the masterplan comprised seven new blocks, providing over 500 student en-suite study bedrooms, a zinc-clad conference accommodation block and a new arts centre. The crescent-form plan frames the green external spaces and embraces the river.

A simple concrete tunnel-form construction system has created movement and richness, allowing each flat to project relative to its neighbours. L-shaped windows provide the study seating with panoramic views. These robust buildings, formed uniformly in brick or in zinc, complement the Sheppard Robson brutalist 1960s buildings they neighbour. Sheppard Robson also completed the subsequent sixth phase of the development, which provided a further 1,400 bedrooms in 17 four and five-storey blocks.
