Ark EdCity, W12 London, UK
A joint venture between educational charity Ark and the LBHF Council, this educational hub in London’s White City brings together a range of facilities and organisations striving to improve educational standards in the local community. The mixed-use campus includes a 480-place replacement primary school; a new Adult Community Learning Centre; a 75-place nursery for Harmony Neighbourhood; a new Youth Zone activity centre, with rooftop MUGA, for Onside.
The project also includes 132 residential units – with 55% of these providing affordable and key worker housing (= 38 for social rent, 28 intermediate rent and 66 private rental) – as well as a nine-storey 12,799m² office building for the Ark Group and other third sector tenants. The range of facilities are connected through a series of public spaces that have been designed by BD Landscape Architects. The most significant of these is EdCity Square to the east of the site, which links the development to White City Place.
A new pedestrian boulevard runs through the centre of the project, promoting permeability and helping connect the community to the adjacent White City Estate. A simple palette of materials has been used to create a ‘family’ of buildings that share a common language, whilst the proportion and detail of the materials used on each block creates a distinct identity for each element. The majority of the buildings are formed of brick and pre-cast concrete, informed by – and building on – the site’s immediate surroundings. A secondary palette of materials is deployed on the education buildings: the Youth Zone is distinguished by its metal cladding, whilst reflective, coloured ceramic tiles are used at ground floor level as accents to signal the entrances to the buildings.
