Archbishop Beck Catholic Sports College Liverpool, UK
Archbishop Beck Catholic Sports College in north Liverpool is the second school to be developed by Sheppard Robson and Willmott Dixon using the ‘Liverpool Schools Model’, prototyped at Notre Dame Catholic College.
A defining characteristic in the design of Archbishop Beck is the focus on support and promotion of the college’s sports specialism: the new college features an 8 court sports hall housed separately in a simple one volume space and linked by a connecting structure to the main accommodation, 3 outdoor all-weather pitches and MUGAs increasing the range of sporting activities the school is able to provide and reinforcing the connection between sports education and the wider curriculum.
Accommodation is arranged over three floors around a central space. Upper floors adopt a ‘pin-wheel’ layout with principal teaching accommodation lining the building perimeter and learning clusters located in each corner with breakout areas offering external views.
Circulation galleries overlook the central heart space and specific areas connect directly such as the chapel, learning resource centre and Sixth Form social study area.
