Aldwych House, WC2 London, UK
The £15m project – situated within the Westminster Conservation Area – creates a bold design addition that rationalises the rooftop of this prominent London building with a dramatic pavilion-like structure, made up of a series of geometrical-folded forms.
The scheme adds around 8,500ft² of high-quality office and reception space to the landmark 168,000ft² Midtown office building. The structure is clad in zinc with carefully positioned glazing to frame views towards Southbank and the City, whilst also controlling solar gain.
The extension rests on building’s mansard roof, with the design improving the proportion of Aldwych House and making it consistent with neighbouring rooflines. Sheppard Robson’s design has been carefully considered so the new roof form responds to the classical composition of the building’s main elevation.
