68-86 Farringdon Road, EC1 London, UK
Sheppard Robson’s design for 66-86 Farringdon Road in London transforms a site - currently occupied by a multi-storey carpark- into a major mixed-use development. For client The Whitbread Group, the scheme will include a 181-key hotel, office accommodation and retail spaces within a distinctive new building that is in-keeping with the vibrancy of Clerkenwell whilst acknowledging the history of the site.
The exterior of the building is formed from by a concertina-like metal and glass façade that animates the street presence of the design whilst breaking down the massing of the structure. This composition also frames angled views from the office and hotel floorplates of Farringdon Road. Sheppard Robson’s design is also informed by the size and proportions of the residential blocks that had previously occupied the site for much of the twentieth century, allowing the new development to fit comfortably within its urban context.
The new building will provide retail, hotel and office frontages at ground floor level, with the hotel on the north and centre part of the site. The hotel will be operated by Premier Inn, using the company’s new ‘Hub’ concept for creating compact, high-quality hotel rooms. The hotel will include a touchdown cafe space which will be open to guests and the public.
The office accommodation will be located on the upper floors of the southern end of the site The proposed floor plates will offer well-lit, flexible spaces that could be occupied by a single user or let floor-by-floor.
