Sheppard Robson, is toasting the winners of the 2010 student awards from Glasgow’s Mackintosh School of Architecture; Kugathas Kugarajah (Best Part 1 Student) from Glasgow and Joanne Hemmings (Best Design in Sustainable Architecture Part 2) from Ayr.

Each year, Sheppard Robson sponsors a series of student awards in partnership with universities across the UK, including Glasgow. The awards are in their third year.

The architect practice provides cash prize of £500 in the categories of Best Part 1 Student, recognising students in their third academic year, and Best Design in Sustainable Architecture Part 2 Student, which is awarded to a fifth-year student.

Reiner Nowak, associate in Sheppard Robson’s Glasgow office, was responsible for judging the designs. He said: “Judging the awards was particularly difficult this year as the standard of entries was extremely high. In the end, we selected the students who, not only presented resolved and refined designs, but also stood out with their slightly playful approach to planning.”

Nowak continued: “The aim of the awards is two-fold; to strengthen our ties with Higher Education in order to find the best emerging talent in architecture, and to support students in developing exciting, progressive designs to the best of their ability.

“Sheppard Robson encourages its staff to perform part time teaching roles at the school, which has resulted in an exciting transfer of knowledge - in true Mac tradition, it’s never just a one-way street!”

The ceremony was held in June as part of the Glasgow School of Art degree show.
